Was it the latest compilation "En résumé..." that you bought? There are so many compilations issued. Françoise may visit your page, as I have done, but unless she has Korean Text Display Support and understands the Korean language, I don't think it will mean much to her.

About 30 years ago, I fell in love with an album a friend of mine had; it is listed in your "Lyrics" section as "1968 LP Vogue CLD 728." Francoise was singing American rock songs from, I think, the early '60's and my favourite was her singing Ricky Nelson's "Lonesome Town." Also to hear these hits sung in French only enhanced the romanticism for me.
Where can I get this CD? I am in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, about 25 minutes from Toronto, Ontario.

Hello Rod. This is one of the albums which has been released on CD, and should still be available to buy, probably more readily available in Canada than many other places. Failing that, it is currently shown as available through FNAC. I visited Canada, 30 or so years ago, and stayed with relatives in their apartment on Bloor Street, Mississauga. Happy memories.

Hello Anne. Thank you for your message. Yes, this album is a fine introduction to Françoise, covering about 20 years of her career. Some of these songs were recorded before you were born, and it's interesting to know that they are still appreciated after all this time. "Message personnel" was written by Michel Berger, but the spoken part at the beginning of Françoise's version was added later, written jointly by Françoise and Michel Berger.

Il existe encore tant de merveilles (fin des années 60, début des années 70) non disponibles en CD. Il serait tant que les maisons de disques vident leur tiroirs...et que Mme Hardy y mette un peu du sien en les motivant!

I have just discovered the album "IF YOU LISTEN" that Virgin has just published for the first time on CD. It is a rare and splendid pearl. A marvellous Christmas present to be bought urgently.
This album only in English (except for the melodious BRULURE) has aged surprisingly well, because only the date on the cover can make us believe that it is a record which is 30 years old.
Just like the album "1-9-7-0" which contains the English version of the much sought after "A CLOCHE-PIED SUR LA GRANDE MURAILLE DE CHINE". Available only at HMV in London for the price of 60FF... Go there quickly, there are not many left!
German also suits Françoise very well: the Gothic song TRÄUME is quite simply bewitching and hypnotizing. I recorded this song in continuation onto a cassette which I listen to non-stop in my car...
When will there be a compilation CD of the "less well-known" songs of Françoise in German?
There are still so many wonders (from the end of the 60s, and the beginning of the 70s) unavailable on CD. The record companies should empty their drawers... and Mrs. Hardy should help to justify them!)

Hello Thierry. Yes, both the CDs "If you listen" and "1-9-7-0" are well worth getting hold of. The record companies have done a good job, so far, of releasing Françoise's work on CD, so we may be lucky to get the obscure songs eventually.

Hello Clement. Thank you for your message. Yes, I understand your frustration at the number of items that are not available for fans to buy. But I can also understand from the point of view of the record companies. Although we all love her very much, Françoise has never been as popular as many of the other singers you mention, and the record companies are mainly there to make money. I know too that there are no commercially available videos of Françoise, but is that perhaps because Françoise has never wanted any released? Are there enough of us to persuade Virgin that it would be worthwhile?

Hello Allan. "Only Friends" was the first Françoise song I heard, and her music and pictures were with me through my degree course, also at the end of the 60s. "Françoise Hardy sings in English" was never released on CD in the same format as the LP, but a CD "All over the world" was released in France in 1988. This CD included all the songs from the LP, and 6 other English songs. Unfortunately, it is no longer available, and is a much sought after collectors item. You may be lucky enough to find a second hand copy.

Hello Dave, Yes, Françoise was always primarily a songwriter and singer, but because of her beauty, was an obvious target for film producers of the 1960s. She appeared in 7 films altogether, mainly small parts, but all worth seeing. It should be fairly easy for you to find Françoise's music in the USA, or if not, it is readily available through the internet.

Hello Enrico, These songs, recorded in French, German and Italian were never released on CD and are quite hard to find on vinyl.
(Bonjour Enrico, ces chansons, enregistrées en français, l'allemand et l'italien n'ont été jamais sorties en CD et sont tout à fait difficile de trouver sur le vinyle.)

The photo of Françoise as a cowboy was almost certainly taken by Jean-Marie Périer. I believe it appeared in the magazine "Salut les Copains" in the 1960s. I have no details at all about the photo of Françoise with Jacques Dutronc, but it was possibly taken on Corsica. Maybe somebody else knows more...

Hello Kimberley, thank you for your message. "Tous les garçons et les filles" has appeared on many compilation CDs; 2 were released this year. Françoise's first album which included this song has also been released in digipack format this year, so you should be able to find it somewhere.

My French version would be: "Des rêves tissés de déception"
It does not translate litterally and exactly the idea. But it sure sounds very well phonetically. And you do not need to put a Big letter (majuscule!!!) at the beginning of each word, for in French you do not write it the same as in English.
The word "tissé" means "woven", for laced could be embroided "brodé" or laced "laçé" : the literal translation does not sound good in French, a little too precious (in the bad sense of the word) and Françoise is absolutely not that kind of a person, while "tissé" gives a better idea meaning it is "intertwined" which is the idea I think. Sorry for my English.

My Band is The Innocents, who had our last hit in 1980... SOONER OR LATER. It got some airplay in France. I've been a fan of Françoise since I was 6. I'm now 43. Isn't that loyalty. Our version with Wendie Colter is going to be a big hit. And I hope to make Françoise very proud and honoured.

This song goes back to 1964, so it may be difficult to get all the information you need. However, I have some, so I hope it will help.
The song was written by Charles Blackwell, and was also released in the UK by the Vernons Girls.
I have the sheet music for this song, believe it or not, an Australian copy! The publishing companies for this sheet were -

Unfortunately, there is no trace of the English company now in the 'phone book, so they are probably long gone.

Hello Chris. I have never heard anyone speak of Françoise having recorded either of these 2 songs. I know "It hurts to say goodbye" was recorded by Vera Lynn in 1967, but I don't know about "Language of love".

Hello Jean. Yes, you are right. These songs are very difficult to find. The first 2 were on LPs released in Brazil and South Africa, and the other only on a German LP. All I can suggest is to look out for them in the adverts in record magazines such as JukeBox Magazine or at record fairs.

Hello John. Yes, there are plenty of magazine covers, but I'm sure there are still many I have never seen. Françoise's music is difficult to find in the UK too, but now CDs are quite easy to find on the internet, and at reasonable prices if you look round. If you see anything you would like, try asking your local record store to order it for you - they may just oblige.

Hello Don, thank you for your message. I would say that none of Françoise's albums prior to "Décalages" were in a similar style. The strong backing on most of the tracks on "Décalages" is unlike anything else Françoise had previously recorded. Others may disagree... The only CD release of "En Anglais" was in 1990 on the Japanese Epic/Sony label - probably difficult to find now, but keep looking.

Today, the 4th of may, I bought Françoise's new cd "Clair Obscur". To my surprise the cd was already available in Holland. It's a wonderful piece of work. Her last cd, "Le Danger", was influenced by the latest musical developments. Very interesting and modern but hard to understand. On "Clair Obscur" Hardy goes back to her roots: la chanson française. And I must admit, this one sounds better. The whole atmosphere is tranquille, nice arrangements, poetic, intelligent. And also sad. The duet with Dutronc is charming. The cover "So Sad" (Everly Brothers) with Etienne Daho is nicely done. "La saison des pluies" is beautiful. But after first hearing I like most "Un homme est mort". La radio locale diffusait à toutes les deux heures les suaves paroles de Gainsbourg chantées par ma chère Françoise et je trimballais ma radio transistor partout juste pour l'entendre et aussi parce qu'un message ponctuel de Françoise, allant comme suit, nous était diffusé à toutes les heures de la journée, tout l'été durant. Quel ravissement!!! alors que sa voix aimée s'échappait de la radio: "Ici Françoise Hardy..." et l'heure de l'Opération Vacances... (le thème promotionnel de la station)... il est maintenant... 8 heures (9 hres-10 hres-11 etc).

Je ne l'ai vue qu'une fois à la télé locale interpréter "Je fais des puzzles" nous n'avions pas beaucoup de ses visites, trop peu.Très peu de documents audio-visuels nous sont parvenus au Québec; aucune émission de variétés françaises. Vous imaginez ma joie d'avoir pu capter sur mon magnétoscope, il y a deux ans, une émission spéciale intitulée "MODES D'EMPLOI", télédiffusée sur une chaîne de télé spécialisée. 25 ans plus tard, je me suis enfin gavé d'images mouvantes et d'entrevues, vu des clips de toutes les époques... document extrêmement précieux pour moi puisqu'il n'existe rien d'autre en vidéo sur elle, de ce côté-ci de l'Atlantique, en tous cas.

Je possède plus d'une quinzaine de ses D.C., dont cinq ou six compilations en français, italien, allemand, anglais, ainsi que ses plus récentes et excellentes collaborations avec Blur, Air, Iggy Pop, Alain Lubrano etc. en D.C.simples mais ma sensibilité aime d'une façon particulière sa période fin 60-début 70 (Voilà, Message personnel, Point, Des ronds dans l'eau, Comment te dire adieu, l'album produit avec Tuca et Love songs, compil de ses collaborations avec Michel Berger) Elle fut ma consolation, (et continue de l'être) dans les temps éprouvants de mon adolescence. Aujourd'hui, je ne me lasse toujours pas des ses disques joués cinq à la fois en position aléatoire (random) dans mon lecteur de disques. Sa voix me calme comme aucune autre, et ses textes m'enchantent comme aux premiers jours. Je me retrouve dans cette délicatesse d'âme et d'esprit qu'exhale sa voix. Et la personne la plus importante dans ma vie partage mon avis. Et c'est bien.

Longue vie donc à Françoise et à sa capacité de se renouveler sans se trahir elle-même. J'espère qu'elle viendra faire la promo de son prochain album, comme elle l'avait fait avec "Le danger". Dieu qu'elle est la bienvenue, ici, dans cette partie d'Amérique française!

P.S. Existe-t-il une compilation de "sus exitos en espanol"? Et sa rétrospective de 3 disques chez Vogue parue l'an dernier, pas disponible ici, contient-elle des chansons remixées? Et si oui, sont-elles différentes et bonnes?

(What a beautiful discovery is this site dedicated to Françoise Hardy! And what a superb photographs, the majority unknown to me; I was pleased to see it! Congratulations on your beautiful work. There is no need to say that there will be a delay for me in getting a copy of "Clair-obscur", since it will not be in store in Montreal, until probably June-July unless I get it via Internet!!!! The first song of Françoise that I liked passionately, not having a hi-fi system then, so making do with a local radio station that broadcast this song approximately every two hours during the day, it was "Comment te dire adieu?"; the solitary teenager of 13-14 years that I was, heard it during break as the radio at college broadcast it widely. What a "Sad delight" to recapture the words of J-M.Périer.

I also remember going to the record shop just to see the cover of the album "SOLEIL", which I dreamed of having (still not having a record player and which I got most recently as well as the very beautiful "ÉCLAIRAGE", "Comment te dire adieu?" and an Italian compilation.) The local radio broadcast every two hours the suave words of Gainsbourg sung by my dear Françoise and I carted round my transistor radio everywhere just to hear it and also because a specific message of Françoise, going as follows, was played to us on every hour of the day, all through the summer. What rapture!!! when her beloved voice escaped from the radio: "Françoise Hardy here..." and the time of Operation Holidays... (the promotional topic of the station)... it is now... 8 o'clock (9 o'clock, 10 o'clock, 11 o'clock etc.).

I only saw her once on local TV singing "Je fais des puzzles" we did not have many of her visits, too few. Very few audio-visual documents reached us in Quebec; no French variety programme. Imagine my joy at having been able to record on my video, two years ago, a special transmission entitled "MODES D'EMPLOI", televised on a specialized TV channel. 25 years later, I finally had plenty of moving images and interviews, and saw clips from all periods... an extremely invaluable document for me since there are no other videos of her, on this side of the Atlantic, at least.

I have more than about fifteen her CDs, of which five or six are compilations in French, Italian, German, English, as well as her more recent and excellent collaborations with Blur, Air, Iggy Pop, Alain Lubrano etc. on CD singles but my sensitivity likes in a particular way her period at the end of the 60s and the beginning of the 70s ("Voilà", "Message personnel", "Point", "Des ronds dans l'eau", "Comment te dire adieu", the album produced with Tuca and "Love songs", the compilation of her collaborations with Michel Berger.). She was my consolation, (and continuous to be so) in the trying times of my adolescence. Today, I still never get tired of playing her CDs five at a time in random order in my CD player. Her voice calms me like no other, and her lyrics enchant me just as in the first days. I find myself in this gentleness of soul and spirit which her voice breathes. And the most significant person in my life shares my opinion. And it is good.

So long life to Françoise and her capacity of renewal without betraying herself. I hope that she will come here to promote her next album, as she did with "Le danger". God how she is welcome, here, in this part of French America!

PS. Does there exist a compilation of "her hits in Spanish"? And does her retrospective of 3 discs published last year by Vogue, not available here, contain remixed songs? And if so, are they different and good?)

Bonjour Maurice. Thank you for revealing to us the story of your dedication to Françoise.
Videos of Françoise are very difficult to find, there being none released officially. We have to rely on copies recorded by fans from TV broadcasts. I don't know whether Françoise will go to Canada to promote "Clair-obscur" - she is not very happy travelling any more.
Françoise only recorded 2 songs in Spanish, "Sol" and "El telefono corte", and as far as I know, these songs have only ever appeared on a vinyl single. On the recent 3 CD release, all the tracks are taken from the series "Françoise Hardy Story", released in 1989. Of the 54 tracks, 24 are remixes, but they are only slightly different from the originals.

Hello Tony, thank you for your message. You are very lucky to have seen Françoise performing live - and twice too! That is something I missed out on. So, you are her biggest fan? I can think of a few people who would disagree with you...
There are plenty of CDs available, but there are still some songs that have never been released on CD, so the old LPs are worth keeping, and some of the South African releases are quite rare. The 2 songs you picked out are amongst my favourites too. Look out for the new album "Clair-obscur" which is available now through the internet, and may reach your part of the world sometime.

Hello John, and welcome to the world of Françoise Hardy. You will find plenty more CDs on offer through the internet, but save some of your money for the new album! Françoise's CDs are fairly scarce here in the UK, but it is possible to find some, especially in the larger London stores. Yes, much effort has been put into these pages, but over a period of 4 years or so, and with much help from other fans.

Yes, it would have been very interesting to see Françoise on stage with Julien Clerc. We have to go to incredible lengths to catch a glimpse of Françoise these days. A collection a rarities would be good, but I think there would be a big problem with the copyright of things that Françoise did before she joined Virgin.

The song "Tiny Goddess" was written by Alex Spyropoulos, Patrick Campbell-Lyons and Ray Singer, and was the debut single of their (British) group Nirvana in 1967. They met Françoise at a song festival in Brazil, so possibly her version of the song resulted from that meeting. I have really no idea of the meaning of the song at all, but if you find out, I would be interested to know.

Hello Malcolm. If you like the style of "Le Danger", I would recommend "Décalages", the previous album released in 1988. The next album, "Clair-obscur", to be released in May 2000, is a complete change, back to a more gentle style, and although I have not yet heard it, have heard good reports from those who have. Françoise wrote all the lyrics for "Le Danger", some jointly with Alain Lubrano, who also wrote some of the music. Rodolphe Burger and Jean-Noël Chaléat wrote the other music. Thomas was not involved with "Le Danger", but has been with the new album, and accompanies Françoise on guitar on "Contre vents et marées".

Hello Helmut. Like many of the German songs, "Frag den Abendwind" has unfortunately never been released on CD. As well as being a single, it did appear on a number of German LPs, but I don't know how easy these are to find now.

Hello Mark. What a find that was! The Japanese LPs are well sought after, and Message Personnel is one of my favourites.
Since the sixties, when Françoise had a few chart entries, she has become virtually unknown to all but a few British music fans. Maybe she will have more success in the UK with the new album which includes a couple of English songs. We will see.

Hello Amancio, these songs are very difficult to find, and they were never released on CD, but there are copies about. You may possibly be able to find one at a record fair.

Hello Lydia. "All Over the World", a compilation of Françoise's English songs, released in 1988 and now very difficult to find, is the only CD this song has appeared on. You may be able to find a copy second hand, if you're lucky. I don't think I have ever seen a video of Françoise performing this song.

Yes, there is certainly more information available now than there was a few years ago. There will be more too. Françoise's record company, Virgin, are planning on creating a web page for her.

Hello Eric, thank you for your message. The postponement of the release date was a little disappointing, but I'm sure the wait will be worth it. I will pass your birthday wish on to Françoise, although she has asked that I don't send all the messages - there are far too many for her to reply to.

Hello Philip, thank you for your comments - I'm glad you found the site. I too found that Françoise's songs helped me with my French at school, and has done since. "Au Fond du Rêve Doré" has been available on several CDs, and is currently available on a 54 track 3CD boxed set "Les années Vogue 1962 - 1967", although many of the tracks are remixes of the originals. The CD is available from FNAC and possibly other places.
