(Hello to all you who love Francoise Hardy... I have always adored her because she is for me and many people the greatest French singer, as much for her words as for her music. Her journey is unique and what is more paradoxical is that she stopped performing live in 1968. She remains in spite of everything intact in our memory, and if we love her it is because since she appeared she exudes a magnificent aura. Her natural class, her devilish beauty and her luminous softness touch us infinitely. As for her voice (which she does not like?), it is the same softness, it is this timbre so particular, clear, light, muffled which gives the impression of murmuring very strong words to he or she who listens. I adore her melodies and her inspired words, it is very purifying. The chords which accompany her transcend even more my senses and I love it when it becomes slow and sad with a background of choirs, of piano or violins... Her latest CD Tant de belles choses is a little marvel: she imparts a strange atmosphere and even if it is sad there remains an optimistic note. I adore also the 2 songs in English Moments and So many things. I would like to say at the same time to all the fans of Francoise all over the world, who have the chance to see satellite TV, that FRANCE 3 will broadcast on Monday January 3 at 23h30 (French time), an exceptional portrait of our superstar. On the other hand, on Sunday January 16 the sublime Francoise will be the guest of Michel Drucker in the broadcast "Vivement Dimanche prochain", on FRANCE 2 for more than 2 hours... Prepare your K7. Bye Bye to all.)
Hello Michel. Thank you for telling us how you feel about Françoise. You seem determined to fill up this page for 2004 all on your own... On behalf of those who will be able to watch, thank you also for the information about the TV programmes.

Does anyone have - or can anyone direct me to the Guitar Chords for "All over the world".
Have trawled the web for ages without success - if I can find them would glady share them with any other FH fan.
Many thanks (in anticipation)
Hello David. I have a copy of the sheet music for All over the world. It seems to include some chords, but I'm sure, if you are at all musically inclined, you would be able to understand it. I will scan it and post it to the web site for you.

(I adore FRANÇOISE HARDY and her voice clear, light, and her wild appearance, her natural class, her devilish beauty. There is not a day when I don't listen to her sad, deeply moving, melancholic songs which transcend me. Bizarrely when I have the blues they revive me. Thank you dear FRANCOISE for this last album, of a poignant beauty which carries you very high. For a very long time, I have only listened to you. I do not care at all for the other singers because I find their melodies have a pathetic dullness, apart from a few exceptions... I have all your records except some foreign releases unknown in France. I would be happy if someone can help me find the foreign titles I have not been able to find. I say thank you to whoever will help me...)
Hello again Michel. You do not say which foreign songs you are missing, and neither of your messages included an e-mail address, so I cannot make a personal reply.

I was well chuffed to have been in Paris recently and (fleetingly) meet Francoise in Virgin. Top timing! I was the bumbling Englishman, doing a good impression of Hugh Grant, talking dreadfully bad French. I gave her some of my own music... www.ram.uk.com (check it out). I hope she listened to it and liked it. She's been a huge influence on me as a writer, so if you ever fancy a collab Fran, I'm your man! J'écoute de la musique saoûle... what a blinder! And what a gorgeous woman. All the best for 2005. Love Pottsy xxx
Hello David, and thank you for your message. I was at Virgin that day too, thinking perhaps I was the only Englishman there. I listened to the song on your web site, but must admit I failed to recognise the influence of Françoise. Good luck in your attempts at a collaboration - you never know...

(Hello to you all in the world and who love this very great artist who is called FRANÇOISE HARDY. I am French from Nice and today I live a great part in the south of Morocco. I have always adored this great song writer, because she can marvellously search the psychology of love through the texts of her songs. I have all her records, video documents and many press cuttings which I collect. On the other hand, I have seen on a very detailed German site that she has released many foreign songs unknown in France, which frustrates me greatly. What is there still say of Francoise Hardy?... that she is still very beautiful and she has always had the beauty of the devil.)
Hello Michel, thank you for your message. Yes, we are all a little frustrated that there are still many songs that have never been released on CD and that are difficult to find on vinyl. You have to be dedicated to search out these items from record fairs, auction sites and second hand record shops. They are there to be found, believe me.

And I have just copied the lyrics for "La nuit est sure la ville". I am very happy to have found these memories. From time to time, I sing "All over the world". I like this song very much.)
Hello Diana. All over the world is one of my all time favourites too. As you know, I'll be seeing you is on the CD Clair-obscur, released in 2000, and Françoise has just released another excellent CD, Tant de belles choses.

Dear Francoise
I just watched 'Grand Prix' for the third time in my life, the first being at its UK premiere in 1966 and I have fallen in love with you all over again. I just found your website so that I could tell you this, but also discovered that you are still beautiful to this day. Now I will take the trouble to find out all about your musical career which I didn't realise you had. A truly beautiful lady. XX
Hello Peter. Yes, I enjoy watching "Grand Prix" despite Françoise's minor role. If you didn't know anything about the musical side of Françoise's life, then you have much to discover.

At the moment I am listening to my Francoise Hardy CD, All over the world.
I bought the original record back in 1970 and have been a fan of hers ever since.
It brings back a lot of memories of High School, friends and first romance. Would like to know the title of her most recent English CD. Thanks.
Hello HE WOWim. Ah, yes, what memories... The last English album that Françoise recorded was released in 1972. The album which was untitled also included one song in French. It was released on CD in 2000 titled If you listen. Since then, Françoise has recorded several songs in English, some as duets. There are two English songs - Moments and So many things - on the latest album, released in November.
Dick Hollander (from Amsterdam, Netherlands) visited on Thursday, November 18, 2004 and said: -
Well, she did it again. The new CD of Francoise Hardy 'Tant de belles choses' is very interesting. It's made with so much care. You can hear that everyone is doing its utmost to make it sound special and precious. She doesn't act as a 'Grand Old Lady of the French Chanson' like Juliette Greco does, no, she isn't pretentious. The sound is modern but not too modern. Maybe it's a revenge of Francoise for her CD 'Le danger' (1996). The reviews then were perfect, but the people didn't agree. This is not an easy-listening CD, you've got to do your best, especially with the lyrics. But if you do, you'll discover that although Francoise is already 60 years old she is so very good.
For the ones who don't understand French: 2 songs are in English, composed by Perry Blake.
Hello again Dick, and thank you for your review. I have found the album instantly likeable, and although I like most of Françoise's songs, some previous album releases have taken some time to become real favourites. For me, the best songs on the album are Tant de belles choses and Un air de guitare with Jardinier bénévole and Sur quel volcan? not far behind. Having first heard Françoise singing in English all those years ago, the two English songs So many things and Moments are also special. Well done Françoise!

Thank you too for the news of the signing session. I will try my best to get there.

In Italy is come out a comedy movie, with a famous Italian comedienne called Luciana Litizzetto, the movie is called "Se devo essere sincera" translation - "If I have to be honest"... which is a real homage to Françoise...
In the movie the husband of the protagonist is a fan of Françoise so all the soundtrack is Françoise's songs: La bilancia dell'amore, Gli altri, I sentimenti, Ce petit coeur, Comment te dire adieu, Tous les garçons et les filles.
And the amazing things is that every 20 minutes there is a full screen image of Françoise singing in the sixties one of these Italian songs.
I still don't know if there is the CD of the soundtrack of the movie; I think so because she is very famous in Italy and the movie is having a big success in Italy, but in this case will be interesting because neither "La bilancia dell'amore" or "I sentimenti" has come out on CD. I will go to shop this weekend to see if there is the CD, if I will find it I will write to you.
Ciao!
Roberto
Hi Roberto. Thank you for this interesting news. I will look out for a copy of the film on the Internet sites. And yes, if a soundtrack CD was released that would be excellent.
Roberto wrote again on Tuesday, November 9, 2004: -
Bad news...
The CD of "Se devo essere sicera" has come out, BUT very, very strangely there is not even one song of Françoise, which is very absurd since all the soundtrack is made mainly by her songs (she sings 6 songs in the movie)... I think that they didn't give them the right to publish them or the rights were too expensive or another possiblity is the there are voices that after the new album, WEA which is the owner of her Italian songs want to publish a CD with her Italian songs... who knows... we will see... :-)
Hi Roberto. Well, that is disappointing news, but I like the idea of an Italian songs CD. Let's hope the rumours are true.

The song is gorgeous.
I have an old magazine with the diary of FH in England in February '68 and she talks about a tour in the British universities (Brighton, Liverpool, Durham, Birmingham and Southampton).
Pierre
Hello Pierre. I have still only heard the 30 second clip of this song, but it certainly sounds very promising. Thank you for the information about the university tour. I feel a little better now, knowing that I did not miss her in Leeds, but I would probably have travelled to any of these places to see her if I had only known.

Hello Claude-Alain. Yes, I have seen that FIP have been playing tracks from Tant de belles choses, but I am never listening at the right time. I did find a 30 second extract of the title song, and there's now a link to it on the "Tant de belles choses" page. Difficult to judge from such a short extract, but it sounds good to me. I have been a fan of Francoise Hardy since my student days. I went to Trinity College, Cambridge (1966-69) with my two elder brothers, Bill and Richard. The former was Captain of 1st and 3rd Trinity College Boat Club which hosts the May Ball and was privileged to arrange an appearance at the ball (which my parents attended) by Francoise in 1965, when he rowed for Cambridge in the Boat Race against Oxford on the Thames. Richard was Secretary of the club and rowed for Cambridge in 1968 (and won!): he still rows and was performing in Boston, Mass., USA last week. Wishing her all the best, Tom.
Thank you for your interesting recollection, Tom. You must be about the same age as me - I was at university in Leeds between 1966 and 1969. Although I was a fan of Françoise before this time, it is only later that I found out that she had performed at English universities and that I may even have missed her at Leeds. If you have any more information about her appearance in Cambridge (dates, etc.), I would be very interested in knowing.

I just want to say that I think you are the greatest female vocalist in the world! I fell in love with you and your music when I bought the LP 'Francoise Hardy sings in English'. Back in 1965. I have been buying all your records since. I can't wait for your new CD to come out. I hope they get it soon at the store I usually go to for your records. Otherwise, I know some websites that will be sure to have it. Is there anyway I can get an 8x10 publicity photo of you? Maybe autographed? For my collection. I have autographed photos of some stars I've met over the years and I would be happy and proud to include you. I will sign off for now.
Always a friend, Doug.
Hello Doug. Thank you for your message. I'm sure Françoise would be interested to hear of your dedication support. However, by sending a message here, you are only writing to me, a humble fan, like you. To contact Françoise herself, I used to suggest the official website: - www.francoise-hardy.com - but I understand this no longer works. The only other suggestion I have is to write to Virgin Music France, whose address can be found further down this page. Good luck.

I thank you once again for this great and informative site. It is always a joy and a pleasure to stop and "browse" here. You continue to create a "work of art" about an artist who is Herself a "work of art"! :)
Hello again Michael. Yes, the release date for the new CD is approaching fast. I am enjoying listening to "Soir de gala" - the only song I have heard so far - and I'm sure the rest will be just as good. How do I begin?
I come to this site by a lot of bouncing around the music inspired by europop. I am a big fan of Goldfrapp and Saint Etienne, and their fans (especially St. Et's) are name-checking French legends like Gainsbourg, Birkin, and Hardy. I have already become a big fan of Jane Birkin, and plan to see her in Cleveland, Ohio next month.
This has given me a major craving for French music, so inevitably I had to make a reckoning with Francoise Hardy. And that is why I am here.
All it took was the sample you left on the doorstep. One listen to 'All Over The World' and I am wrapped in the bundle of love that all her fans share. I am 40 years old and I have just stepped into this house of song and beauty.
And the website is awesome. Thank you for putting a whole album up for our listening pleasure. I have listened to the first two tracks of 'One Nine Seven Zero'. What she does with lyrics that could have easily dated and sounded like lightweight prog is impressive. And the backup is excellent; the combined effect brings to mind the English progressive group Renaissance. I will save the other tracks for later. I don't want to be finished with this dance too soon.
I read the message board posts through 1999 so far. I look forward to reading the rest.
Again, thank you and God Bless, Brian
P.S. I'll be back, Lord willing, with further notes of my discoveries of this grand new universe.
To Francoise: Thank you for staying in the game with such class and with such love for one man (it is amazing that a 'celebrity' marriage has lasted as long as yours) and for all kinds of music. God Bless You! Brian
Hello Brian, and welcome to the world of Françoise Hardy. People discover Françoise in different ways, and I'm sure you will not be the first who has taken this route. I'm glad you appreciate the audio samples. They are there to try and encourage new fans like yourself to go out and buy for themselves. The album tracks change every month, so don't leave it too long to listen to the rest. The only track I know by Renaissance is "Northern lights", but I can see how you draw a comparison.

Hello Warren,
Many thanks, once again, for maintaining such a wonderful fan site for those of us who appreciate the depth and scope of Francoise Hardy's body of work. I am eagerly awaiting her new release in November. And I heard about it first here!
Thanks also for making "One-Nine-Seven-Zero" available for fans to listen to during the month of October. You had mentioned that this album was re-released (along with the tracks from her 1977 album, Star) in 2000. Since these tracks are somewhat difficult to come by, I thought you might want to elaborate by letting your readers know the title of the CD, "HMV Easy," and that it can be purchased for the bargain price of only 3.99GBP at www.hmv.co.uk (22 hard to find Francoise tracks; they ship all over the world, and I received my copy in California in less than a week).
Thanks again, Warren. I appreciate all the information I have obtained from your site.
Kind regards,
John
Hello John. Yes, I'm sure we are all impatiently looking forward to the release of the new album - Tant de belles choses. Thank you for your suggestions and comments on the site. I have updated this month's music page with information about the availability of the CD. I suppose there could be some fans who didn't know about it.

Hi Warren,
Your web site about Francoise continues to fascinate me and every so often I visit to read the messages, which are quite entertaining. The one by Gavin Bullock last July 10 got me all excited. Does she really answer her fan's letters and write back? If it's true, I wouldn't mind trying my luck. I will even be happy with a form letter reply, but with her authentic hand written signature. Perhaps I will include a CD cover for her to autograph.
Can someone give me a street address?
I can't believe I am writing this note, at my age, 52 years old! I guess that's how much I love her and her music. She lives in me ever since I was 11 or 12 growing up in Saigon. Even that awful war couldn't stop her music from permeating the mind of the young teenagers growing up among bombs, shrapnels and agent orange flying around in those days.
Thanks for keeping us fans together.

Hello Hung, and thank you for your interesting story. To contact Françoise, the best thing I can suggest is to try writing to her at Virgin Music France (Virgin Music, 118 rue Mont Cenis, 75018 PARIS, France). Good luck.

How Can I get some of your sheet music here in the USA.
I really want (Tous Les Garcons Et Les Filles) I have a 11 year daughter who sings well, and likes that song.
Her name is Miranda Hardy.
We hope we can get it in English.
Hello Darwin. Given that "Tous les garçons et les filles" was originally released in 1962, I think it is most unlikely that you would find a copy of the sheet music anywhere in the USA. The English version is "Find me a boy" and I have never yet seen any sheet music for that song. There are 2 other possibilities. You can often find copies of the sheet music for "Tous les garçons et les filles" on eBay. Several books of Françoise's music have been published in France; most of them include this song, and you can find details on my books page. Once you have the music in French, the English words are available on my lyrics pages.
Good luck!

Hello Anne-Sophie. Yes, "Message personnel" was recorded by Françoise in English. It was released first on a promotional single (45T) in 1973 - very difficult to find. It was then released in 1987 on the LP and CD "Love songs". The CD is still available to buy in shops and Internet stores including FNAC where you can hear 45 seconds of the song.

Dear,
I got to this site by chance and thought I should write something, first to express my appreciation to all the work of Md F. Hardy. I am a Vietnamese Canadian. Francoise Hardy's music has been very popular, at least in the South of Vietnam since the late 1960s. Many of her songs have been sung by Vietnamese artists both in French and in Vietnamese. (I also saw some of them on the list). I still have many other F. Hardy's songs sung by Vietnamese singers. Would you like to have them? I would be more than happy to send them to you for the record/references.
Regards, Le Van Chu
Hello Le Van Chu and thank you for visiting. It's always interesting to hear about the popularity of Françoise's music. I found the Vietnamese cover versions by Thanh Lan and Kieu Nga quite easily by searching the Internet, so I'm sure there must be others. Thank you, yes, I would be delighted to receive any more information you have about other cover versions.

(Inrockuptibles No 458, September 8 - 14, 2004.
Hurry.
New album with Benjamin Biolay, Jacno and Perry Blake.
Françoise and the nice guys.
Four years after "Clair-obscur", eight years after "Le Danger" : Françoise Hardy is back with a new album, "Tant de belles choses", recorded with Benjamin Biolay, Alain Lubrano, Perry Blake, Jacno, Thierry Stremler and Ben Christophers as accomplices.
"Three years ago, at a time when I did not know if I would ever make another record, Benjamin Biolay brought me three songs and I chose the bossa-nova", she explains to us.
As for Perry Blake, I had been a backing singer on one of his songs. I telephoned him to tell him that if he had one or two tunes with which he didn't know what to do, then I would take them. Shortly afterwards, he brought me two songs which I liked immediately. I have known and respected Jacno for a long time. I liked very much an instrumental which appeared on his last record, enough to put it on my answerphone. The idea came to me little by little to make a song of it, a kind of duet between voice and instrument. It is perhaps the most original piece of the album".
On this new record, the artist does not leave her melancholy obsessions: "My approach has always been to make the best of a tune worthy of the name. And the only tunes and melancholy climates that interest me are those which bring out sadness - not to say distress - in beauty. It's the way my albums tend to go in general, this one like the others."
"Tant de belles choses" will be released on November 16.)
Merci beaucoup, TeePee, pour ces informations.

Hello everyone.
After reading David's reminiscences of "Grand Prix" (the "I don't dance... I don't drink... I don't smoke" scene is one of my favourites too!), I checked to see if MGM were planning a DVD release. As Françoise has such a small role (we see her about 16 times, for not much more than 8 minutes), it is especially galling that several of her scenes are often dropped from TV broadcasts due to the film being so long. The most frequent omissions are the indoor café scene, the pedalo scene, and the crowded party scene, so a DVD is the only way to see the film in its entirety.
Sadly, no sign of a release, but there is a disc out called "The Making Of 'Grand Prix'". Apparently only 15 of the 80 minutes running time deals with the film, but is there anything of Françoise in those 15 minutes? And is it the same as the "Grand Prix:Challenge Of The Champions" promotional short?
However, it is nice to see that "What's New Pussycat?" is getting a Region 2 DVD release on 27th September. Françoise appears near the end, though for less than a minute. I only realised she was in it when I saw her name in the closing credits, but as this was the first time I ever saw her, I'm rather fond of this movie.
Quite by chance I came across Radio France Internationale Musique, where you'll find a 4300 word Françoise Hardy biography. It's well worth reading, and they very helpfully provide an English version with links to a discography and a short interview from May 2000.

Hello James. Thank you for all the information about "Grand Prix". It would be good to be able to see it on DVD one day. If you do happen to buy "The Making Of 'Grand Prix'", perhaps you could let us know through these pages whether Françoise appears. "What's new Pussycat" may also be worth getting hold of; I will look out for it.
The RFI Music biography certainly puts my effort to shame. It's a page I always intended developing, but I've not achieved it yet. One day, maybe...

Comment on second 33 cm record of 1963
Sentimental Françoise!
With this second record Françoise changes and becomes more poetic with this beautiful song "Le premier bonheur du jour" from Jean Renard and Franck Gerald. This song suits to her like a glove and lights up her first show in "Olympia" music hall in 1963. And then pieces entirely signed by Françoise - words and music - "Saurai-je?" This song shows her lack of self-confidence, "Le sais-tu?" shows us her shyness.
The accompaniments are richer with slight guitar and violins ("J'aurais voulu") mus organ ("L'amour ne dure pas toujours").
The tones are new for an artist who always exercised her wits in order to change from a record to an other.
This record shows an important progression and then it's a record of melancholy and sentimental youth! Precious Françoise!
Hello Gendal. No, we should not forget Françoise's earlier records. Although I prefer the songs from later in the sixties, this LP, released when she was only 19, has some tracks that I always like to hear again, including two that you mention - "Le sais-tu?" and "Saurai-je?".

(I have just discovered the song "Des yeux d'enfant". Absolutely fantastic. It is sublime. So why has it never been released on CD? And yet it is stamped 1970 (Hypopotam) and theoretically under licence by Virgin. Certainly a whim of F. Hardy...)
Hello Francis. Yes, "Des yeux d'enfant" was only ever released on a German LP, and perhaps because of its rarity is always pleasant to hear. Why was it never being released on CD? The question has been asked many times, and so far unanswered.

Hi! I received DVD from a friend of yours, Bernard Deman in the meantime, which is really great. I just wanted to inform you that I spotted a mistake on the lyrics page: On "Oh, Oh cheri" it is not "la collette va tres bien ma fois".

Hello Uwe. Thank you for pointing out the error. These lyrics came from various sources and there have been quite a few mistakes. Since they were added to the web site, I have acquired many pieces of sheet music of Françoise's songs. I have used these to check the lyrics, but this one must have been missed. The sheet music shows this line as "la colère te va très bien ma foi" so that is how I have changed it.

"When I discovered Nick Drake, I at once found his music brilliant and I shouted it from all the rooftops, in particular in England. So I suppose he must have read somewhere that I found him fantastic and he paid me a visit in the studio. That seemed incredible to me, but he came to the studio in which I was in the middle of a recording and hid in the corner. He, extremely timid with problems of communications undoubtedly very important, and me tetanized by his presence, it was rather a comical situation. I suppose that he was content to be there because he knew that I really liked what he did, while his records were not selling. He came to see me like that, from time to time, but it was clear that I could not speak to him. Shortly before his death, he telephoned me. I knew straight away that he was calling me because things were not going well: it was a kind of call for help. He wanted to see me but, the same evening, I was going to see Veronique Sanson at the Eiffel Tower. So I took him with me to the concert, with other friends, and I never saw him again after this evening.

My only exposure to Françoise is from John Frankenheimer's immortal film "Grand Prix." For me she will always be sitting quietly off to the side from the main activity and politely saying, "I don't drink", "I don't smoke" and so on. I watched it with my ten year old son last weekend and told him, "Here comes my girlfriend!" when Françoise first appears on the screen. I've felt the same way since I was 13 and dreamed of going to a European Grand Prix and meeting a girl very much like that. Only treating her better than that Nino Barlini (Antonio Sabato, Sr.) did! Best wishes!
Hi David. Yes, although it was a fairly small part, it is worth watching the film over and over to see Françoise. But, if this is your only exposure to Françoise, you should look out for some of her CDs - there is more talent there than you possibly know!

I have adored Françoise since the late 60s but I only discovered her later work about 8 years ago. I was delighted to find so many more recent photos of her. She is still very beautiful. I wrote to her a few years ago to tell her how much I loved her music and I was astonished to get quite a long reply. I told this to a fellow fan and he wrote to her as well! He got a letter AND a compilation tape of her own favourites, recorded by her own fair hand. I was green with envy and wished I hadn't told him about my own letter. Seriously, it was good to see that she treated her fans with such care and consideration, especially in the giving of her time. Try it with Madonna.
Reading the comments below, I was particularly struck by Sébastien coming to her music at 18. Like Françoise herself, many of her admirers are now in their sixties (is it possible?) and it is good that young people can appreciate and, hopefully, come to love her music.
What we need are adequate translations of her songs (or any translations). I have managed a few but her more intense and poetic lyrics are very, very difficult. "Point", for example, with its play on the title word is a stinker (but a wonderful song). Her words are so important to her and it is sad that non-French speakers are blind to her poetry.
Hello Gavin, and thank you for your message. Yes, it has been a surprise to me the wide age range of those who have been touched by Françoise's songs. If you want to see translations of some of Françoise's songs, you should download the "pdf" documents from Laurent's (ficsx22) web site - www.ficsx22.com. Located in the "download, books" section, Volume 2 - French lyrics includes many English translations.

Comment on record of 1964: "Mon amie la rose".
Gloomy Françoise!
This Françoise's record is very important because it corresponds to a turning point in the Françoise's career with English tones which are brought by the English musician Charles Blackwell. This one knew how to accompany Françoise's melancholy in sensitive pieces like "Dans le monde entier" which was a triumphant success in England in the version "all over the world".
"La nuit est sur la ville" is a song which evokes the uncertainly of the feelings which are increased by the distance.
Many biographical sad songs are suiting Françoise's separation from her loved one at the time of her many tours in the sixties.
And then the first-rate piece "Mon amie la rose" is Cécile Caulier's magnificent song. Cécile Caulier was a writer that Françoise met in the Mireille's "little song school".
We must take this record "Mon amie la rose" into account because it brings up to date the Françoise's poetry in the lasting way.
Excuse me for my rough English. Regards. Gendal
Hello Gendal. Firstly, your English is good. Gloomy Françoise? A little sad perhaps, but not, in my opinion, gloomy. I suppose it's a question of degree. As you say, many of Françoise's songs are biographical, and although (or possibly because) these times were quite difficult for her, the songs from the mid sixties are some of the most sensitive.

I grew up in N.Ireland and first came across Françoise 25 years ago when I bought a copy of "C'est Fab" at the local church fete. I fell in love with her voice and songs - a love affair that continues to this day! I learned how to play and sing "Tous Les Garcons..." and still perform it occasionally. My Dad is a fan as well since he taught English in Paris in the early 1960s and her music is pretty much the soundtrack of his time there - up to and including when he met my mother! I've just bought him a copy of "The Vogue Years" for Father's Day and he is overjoyed! Cheers Françoise for sending a shiver up my spine every time you sing! xx
Hello Karl, thank you for your story. How wonderful to be able to share your love of Françoise's music with your father. Nobody else in my family was ever interested. Oh, to have been in Paris in the 1960s...

Hello!
I'm 18 years old and I discovered Françoise Hardy 2 years ago. I adore every song! First I only had discovered the songs by Vogue: beautiful! It's a pity that I can't find the 4 cd box The Vogue Years. 3 weeks ago I've bought the magnificent longbox MESSAGES PERSONNELS: It's incredible! The beauty of Soleil, Flashback, Clair obscur, J'ai coupé le téléphone, Loving you,... you don't find this in recent music. I adore the French 60's! I'm collecting all the vinyls from Claude François, and it's very probable that within a few years I'll start to collect Françoise, but I've seen the discography, and it's a hell's job, even more than Claude François!
Thanks a lot for this magnificent website. It's great!
I hope Françoise will produce a new album at the end of the year! She's one of the rare artists who, after 40 years, is still making extraordinary songs, and it's never the same! She's a great, great artist!
Thank you Françoise!
Hello Sébastien, thank you for your comments. Yes, "Messages Personnels" is an excellent collection. The 4CD "L'Intégrale Disques Vogue 1962/1967" is extremely difficult to find, but worth looking for. It includes some tracks which have not appeared anywhere else on CD. I wish you luck if you do ever start collecting Françoise's vinyl records. As you say, it is an immense task and you have to be totally dedicated to aim to collect them all.
I think we are all looking forward to a new album this year.

That'll be the day".
(I think that I could collect the lyrics of DAVID BOWIE. But, when come across such a site, I tell myself that there really is someone more mad than me. In any case it is a treat and I do not weary of it. Brilliant, this idea of listening to the English record from 1968. I buried myself with delight in "Tiny goddess" and "That'll be the day". I was seeing myself again at 24 years old. I am not blindly a "fan" of all her songs however. I do not much appreciate Benjamin Biolay; I find the song "Surannée" quite poor melodically. He has the wind behind him at the moment and I find that completely overrated. Rodolphe Burger is much more talented and is much more appropriate for the universe of Françoise. Besides, I prefer the albums where only one spirit of sound emerges. Where there is a unity. The album with TUCA (of course) the orange album with the two profiles, Entr'acte and Le danger that I always listen to with the same pleasure from beginning to end. This said again, an enormous bravo for this marvellous site of great richness. It is cerain that I will return here. And will I perhaps have some use with some recent news, but I doubt it, seeing such an obvious passion. Regards.)
Hello Claude-Alain, thank you for your message and your comments on the site. I'm glad you appreciate the music page. Hopefully, it encourages visitors to buy Françoise's music, but existing fans like yourself are obviously welcome too. I find "Surannée" quite a pleasant song and I look forward to hearing whatever appears on Françoise's new album.

Hi Warren, thanks for this amazing site with such wonderful pics of Françoise. I became more and more fan of her and her music since I've heard six years ago. Tell me something: the collaboration with Blur (To the End) was a single from her or them? I cried with "L'amitie" at the end of "The barbarian invasions" and immediately sent the lyrics to my friend Marina, who's nowadays teaching in Paris. I'll be back, regards.
Hi Ricardo. Thank you for your comments on the site. "To the end" was released both on an album and a single by Blur in 1995, but it was also included on the Japanese release of Françoise's "Le Danger" (1997) and on the 3CD compilation "Messages personnels" (2002).
"L'amitié" is one of my favourite Françoise songs. I've not seen the film "Les Invasions Barbares" yet, but look forward to doing so.

(But if you think.................and I believe it!
When will there be a stage appearance for us, in Belgium? A delicate moment, of tenderness, of love and of beauty. An exceptional moment without any doubt! See you all soon, and thank you.)
Hello Frank. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I think it is most unlikely that Françoise will appear on stage anywhere, ever again. She gave up performing solo concerts back in the late 1960s. She has made only an occasional appearance on stage since then, usually accompanying someone else - for example Julien Clerc in his "le 4 octobre" concert in 1997.

Hello Vincent. Yes, "Surannée" is a pleasant song. I know very little about the forthcoming album yet, but I understand that Virgin are hoping to release it in September or October.

This is a great site.
I have loved the music of Françoise Hardy since I was a small child in the 1960s - my older brother was quite obsessed with Françoise and used to play her records all the time, mainly the English language versions - All over the world, Find me a boy, Only you can do it, etc. but also some of the French ones.
I do not know how popular she was in Australia back then, I think she was not that big. I often play her music when I have guests visiting and no one seems to be familiar with the songs. I find this strange as I have known her songs all my life - another thing to be thankful to my brother for.
I have recently started taking French lessons again and have found your lyrics pages very helpful.
By the way, do you know what is the French version of the song that became 'Only you can do it'? I would love to get it on CD.
regards,
Colin
Hi Colin. Thank you for your comments on the site - I'm glad you are finding the lyrics pages useful. I imagine Françoise's popularity in Australia must have been similar to that in the UK. A small group of dedicated fans, but not enough to make a major impact on the music charts of the day. "Only you can do it" was recorded originally by The Vernons Girls. Françoise translated it into French as "Je veux qu'il revienne", and later recorded both the English version and an Italian version - "Devi ritornare". The French version has appeared on many CDs, some of which are still available for purchase on the Internet, if you cannot find them in your local record store.

I love her music (esp. after 70s) very much!
I'm 27 years old Japanese girl, so it was really hard to collect her CDs...! Her music and lyrics are very beautiful!
A few days ago, my friend gave me a videotape of French TV show 'Trafic Com.', it was show about David Bowie (I'm a huge fan of him), Françoise appeared for it! (Damon Albarn was a guest star, too. I could see David, Damon and our Françoise in same time!) She was cheerful on that show.
Well, thank you for this great site!
Ciao!
Hello Yukie, thank you for your message and your comments on the site. Françoise has always been popular in Japan and has had many records released there. Some of them are much sought after now by collectors all over the world. Françoise has appeared on many TV shows and I have seen a few of them. It's a little disappointing that there aren't any official videos of Françoise's TV performances available. Maybe one day...

I was just listening to the Françoise Hardy record I bought so long ago... Tous les garcons et les filles... first heard the song on a music/movie machine in the ferry building below the Chateau Frontenac boardwalk in Quebec City... (April 1965)
Where is Françoise today? and is she still involved in music? or composing?
Just curious after all these years. Tous les... stands out as a major song of my teenage years and the beginning of my interest in European culture.
Hi Esa-Jane. I think "Tous les garçons et les filles" probably stays in the mind of many people who heard the song back in the 1960s. Yes, Françoise still lives in Paris and is still involved in music and composing. The albums are released less frequently now - the most recent new release (Clair-Obscur) was in 2000 - but Françoise is currently working on another album, hopefully due to be released later this year.

Thank you in advance!

Hello Uwe. I have very few details about Françoise's tours. It is something that would be very interesting to have, but this sort of information is now so difficult to find. You are very lucky to have seen her perform live. Keep the memories.

I was surfing the web for something totally different and came upon this page. I am intrigued. Who is Françoise? I'm sorry, I do not know her music but she sounds quite wonderful from all of your posts. I work at a radio station and we are always looking for fabulous music to play at different times.
Is it possible to buy her records in the States? I am assuming she is a singer that perhaps will resonate with some of our older listeners - in any case, we always have room for good songs.
Thanks!
Hello Ginger. Thank you for your message and your interest in Françoise Hardy. Yes, it is possible to buy Françoise's records in the States. All the major on-line music sites stock them (Amazon, CD Universe, CD Connection etc.), and I imagine any good record shop should have a selection. The majority of the songs are in French, of course, but there have been some in English.
Probably, as you say, she may be more popular with those whose memories go back a way - I have been a fan since the 1960s - but she has a surprising number of young fans too. Go for it! I'm sure you will find something your listeners will enjoy.

First of all I must congratulate you to your great site!!
My question: Where can I find clips of Françoise performing on TV in the 60s?
I was lucky to have a clip downloaded of her singing "Ce petit coeur" on a TV Show 1965, which I enjoy over and over again, but I want more!
Is there a DVD available, comparable to the essential "De Serge Gainsbourg à Gainsbarre 1958-1991"?
Best regards
Uwe
Hello Uwe, and thank you for your message and comments. Unfortunately, Françoise herself has released no DVDs or Videos of her songs. She appeared on a couple of DVDs released in Japan in 2002, featuring TV shows (from 1974 and 1976) of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin. I have a few videos which were copied for me by a friend and fan in Belgium. I will send you his e-mail address.

Hello Françoise,
I don't really know what to say, I just admire you a lot. I come to this page quite often to check out new things. I love so much of the music you've done, but my favourite songs are from the sixties, especially later in the sixties. It's hard to pick a favourite album, but maybe "Comment te dire adieu?". The songs you write yourself are my favourites. I think your last album is among your best actually, I think it's really beautiful.
All my friends know who you are and are fans. I am a singer/songwriter myself, and whenever people ask me who I listen to, I give them your name; as well as Blondie, Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe. I listen to other stuff of course, but you and the other people are my biggest influences.
I hope I'm not flattering you TOO much.
Some of my favourite songs of yours are "Et meme", "A quoi ce sert?", "Pardon", "La mer, the air, the earth" (blanked on the French title), "You just have to say the word", "Another time", and "All over the world", in French and English; and there's just so many more.
Anyhow, I feel really silly; I don't write fan mail usually. I just wanted to say hello and thanks for being here (on earth) and doing music. You've had a big impact on me. See, when I was younger, I always wanted to be like Deborah Harry; especially when doing music, and was really disappointed in myself when I wasn't able to pull that style off. But then I discovered you and your music, and that gave me a different perspective and enabled me to discover that I really was able to do music in a way that was much more suited to my voice, and style.
I was in a band with my ex-husband called The legendary Jim Ruiz group; we released a couple of CD's. That was focused on my husband. Then I released a CD more focused on my singing and songwriting, as well as my friend John, who I co-wrote songs with, and who is a fabulous guitar player. That project was called The Shebrews; we just did the one CD, and never actually played live shows or anything. I'm currently in a band called The Autumn Leaves, which I do a lot of singing in and play guitar, but this is focused on my friend David. I've been recording songs of my own and I'm trying to get a project together called Stephanie Says. I really like playing live shows, so I really want a band.
Anyhow, well now I will go. I hope your life is good, and I look forward to hearing new music from you.
Best wishes, Stephanie
Hello Stephanie, and thank you for writing. There is no direct access to Françoise through this web site, but it is possible that she may read your message. I'm sure she would be interested in what you say. I wish you good luck in your music projects.

Hello Denise. Thank you for your message. The official web site seems to have been a little neglected since it was first created so I am not surprised that the e-mail address there does not work. My husband has been in love with Françoise since being a young man and I must admit her voice and face must have made many young men fall in love with her in the 60's. I also love her voice and am just as much a fan now as my husband is. Do you know if Françoise still performs and if so do you know where, when etc ?
Hello Susan. Unfortunately for us all, there is a very easy answer to this question. Françoise stopped giving live concerts at the end of the 1960s due to stage fright. There have been some live appearances since, but never performing solo. We all now have to make do with the recorded songs which, thankfully, are still being produced - there's at least one more album in the pipeline.

Hello Warren,
I wrote to you a number of years ago and have kept up with the site. You're simply amazing! Thank you so much for being the central info site for FH.
In an update, I have just had a memoir piece, "Liberte," accepted for publication in a major publisher's anthology, "France: a Love Story; women write about the French experience." Françoise appears as my muse in a bittersweet story about finding my freedom in Paris. My piece uses a line of lyrics from "Voila" and I wondered if you knew how to contact her? I have tried her web site, but it no longer comes up. Any suggestions on how to gain the rights to use this line of lyrics. Have you had to have permission to use the lyrics on this site?
Thanks so much for helping me with this.
Also, "Barbarian Invasions" uses film clips of Françoise while the dying man in the movie remembers all those he had fantasies about. Naturellement!
All best to you,
Valerie.
Hello Valerie. Simply amazing? I don't think so, but I'm glad you like what I do. It's a labour of love. I have just re-read your message from 1999 and remember your story. I too have had trouble getting to the official site recently, but it seems to be OK again now. Give it another try.
I have a copy of the sheet music for "Voilà" and the publishers were "Editions musicales Alpha". I had thought that they no longer existed, but in searching the web, I found a site where Alpha had asked for some lyrics to be removed as recently as 2003, but I was unable to find any information about the company themselves on the web, even trying a few International Directory Enquiry sites. Possibly fans from France could help with this, please?
Another alternative would be to try and contact Françoise through her record company, Virgin France. Virgin have re-released many of Françoise's songs from the 1960s, including "Voilà", so they should know how to contact Alpha, or may even hold the publishing rights themselves.
I've never had official permission to use anything which appears my site and sometimes I am surprised that it continues to be unchallenged.
Your piece sounds interesting and I wish you luck in your efforts to get it published.

(If in surfing the web, Françoise came to read her small messages of love... I have just had a brilliant idea (I admit!) for the new album. In fact, I discovered some time ago a really splendid song and which would fit her like a (velvet) glove : "Nothing to lose" from the film "The party" by Blake Edwards and sung at the time by the graceful Claudine Longet. I know that Françoise likes very beautiful melodies and I think this song is a small masterpiece of harmony. So, I think that a forum is also useful for this. I give my e-mail to Maurice again to exchange some messages ("complete works", rarities, DVD, Scopitones... for the purists).
Hello to all and especially to Warren.)
Hello again Clement. I know Françoise is aware of these pages, but I don't know if she ever visits. If not, maybe someone will pass on the suggestion to her. I haven't heard this song by Claudine Longet, but I have heard some of her work, so I can imagine the style. Good luck in your collaboration with Maurice - I'm sure you will keep us all informed of the results.

(Thank you Maurice, my e-mail is . A buddy has just told me that a small advert in "L'Express" this week confirmed work in progress of Françoise with Benjamin Biolay (a very beautiful meeting:)) let us be patient and a kiss on the cheek for the Webmaster.)
Hello Clement, thank you for confirming this information, and yes, we must be patient.

(Françoise returned to the studio for our greatest happiness - a duet with Jane Birkin singing Keren Ann's splendid song "Surannée". The release date for Jane's CD is March 31!)
Hello Gendal. Thank you for this interesting information. I had heard that Françoise had been in the studio recording a song by Benjamin Biolay for her new album. I see that "Surannée" was co-written by Benjamin Biolay and Keren Ann, so maybe this song will also appear on Françoise's new album. I look forward to hearing it.

(I would like to contact Clément Dulac who proposed in 2000 a petition for Virgin in order to urge them to produce a DVD and release again some unobtainable tracks on CD. Thank you, Maurice.)
Hello Maurice. I have sent Clément's address to you in an e-mail. I wish you luck, but the chances are that he is no longer using this address.

So many years after leaving Greece and the old continent I was so touched to see one the best films I have recently watched, "Invasions Barbares". And there at the end of the movie, Françoise Hardy's voice so beautiful, so nostalgic, so touching... There could not have been a better choice for the end of the wonderful two hour journey. Unfortunately, the subtitles went quite fast and I could not catch the title. I would appreciate finding out...
Merci Françoise
Hello Tasos. I have not seen this film, but I heard from a fan when the film was released last year that the Françoise song you heard was "L'amitié". The song was originally released on an LP in 1965, but there is now a CD version. There have also been many compilations including "L'amitié", so you should have no trouble finding a copy.

Warren,
Again I have to thank you for presenting us with the beautiful music of Françoise Hardy, album by album on the "Music Page". While all of Françoise's musical tracks capture, this 1967 album, "Ma jeunesse fout le camp" leaves me breathless! It is certainly among Françoise's "classic". (I have the song, "Des Ronds Dans L'eau" on an album by Lana Cantrell under the title, "So You Want To Be Loved" and Lana does a powerful delivery of this song in English.) Françoise just draws you into her song and holds you till the end... leaving you sorry that the melody has come to an end... as do some loves.
This is one Françoise album that is a "must have". As they say, "seek and you shall find".
Thank you, Warren, for keeping our eyes (and ears) open for all things "Françoise"!
Michael G. Batcho - always a Françoise fan! :)
Hello again Michael. Thank you for your message. I'm glad you appreciate the Music Page.
The idea of course is to introduce existing fans and new visitors to the music of Françoise Hardy, and to encourage them to buy the CDs for themselves. How effective this is, I don't know for sure. I do know one thing though - "Ma jeunesse fout le camp" has been by far the most popular album to have been featured on this page. I can understand why because this has also now become my favourite of all Françoise's albums.
I'm interested to hear about the cover version by Lana Cantrell. Françoise herself recorded an English version of "Des ronds dans l'eau" this song as "Now you want to be loved". Is Lana Cantrell's version different to this?

(Dear Françoise, you were my first big love. 1968! I was 18 years old at the time, and am today still connected with you.)
So, Rolf, "Souvenirs der ersten grossen Liebe", as Françoise sang! From another long time fan of Françoise - welcome to the site.

Françoise, L'Anniversaire heureux. Ma belle.
You are someone very special. There is no one else in this entire world exactly like you, And there are so many beautiful things about you... You are a one of a kind treasure, uniquely here in space and time.
You are here to shine in your own wonderful way, sharing your smile in the way only you can. Remembering all the time that a little light somewhere makes a brighter light everywhere. By your being here (you can and you do) make a wonderful contribution to this world.
You have qualities within you that many people would love to have, and those who truly know you are so happy that they do. You have a big heart and a good and sensitive soul. You are truly gifted with the thoughts and way of seeing things that only the truly special people know how to. You know that life isn't always played by the rules set down by little men, but that in the long look, everything will work itself out.
You understand that you and your actions are capable of turning anything in this world around - and that joys once lost can indeed be once again re-found. There is a resolve and inner reserve of strength in you that few ever get to see.
You have so many treasures within you that even you are only beginning to discover.
NEVER forget what a treasure you are!
That special person in the mirror may not always get the praise and complements you so sweetly deserve, but you are so worthy of such and abundance of... Friendship, Joy, but especially - Our Love and Admiration
Thank you for your message, Arthur. I'm sure Françoise would be pleased to read your words.

Just a line to let you know that today, in celebration of Françoise's 60th birthday, John Platt of BBC Midlands' "Network Gold" programme played "Find Me A Boy", the English version of "Tous les Garcons" at my prompting. Since finding your site over a year ago, I've managed to collect a lot more material on Françoise, fill many gaps in my record collection and generally appreciate her even more. I got her a mention on BBC Radio 2's "Sounds of the Sixties" last year, too. She won't be forgotten as long as I am around! Keep up the good work on this most useful of websites.
Hello again Mike, and thank you for your message. Well done for your efforts in getting Françoise played in the UK - it doesn't happen often enough. I missed "Sounds of the Sixties" this morning, but I do remember Brian Matthew playing a Françoise record one year - perhaps it was yours.

(January 17, 2004.... it's Françoise's birthday so let's wish her a happy day! I have been a fan since the very 1st hour... I was 12 years old when I saw her for the 1st time on the small screen in black and white, wandering between the street lamps and whispering her famous song which later sold more than 3 million copies all over Europe! Since then I have always followed her career having practically all her CDs regretting only that she left so quickly the stage (career-flash)! My preference is for the titles of which she is both composer and songwriter: "Le sais-tu?", "Saurais-je?", "L'amour ne dure pas toujours", "Viens-là", "Doigts", "À quoi ça sert", "Le soir", "L'éclairage", "La nuit est sur la ville", "Dans le monde entier", "Pars", "Peut-être que je t'aime?", "À suivre...")
Hello Gendal, thank you for reminding us. Yes, Happy Birthday Françoise. Sixty years old today! Almost unbelievable. We should all be celebrating, and I hope Françoise is too. Your list includes some of my personal favourites, but whatever she sings is OK by me.

I must say, I've found many interesting facts about my new idol: Françoise H. I was most pleased to be able to get hold on to all lyrics, because as not knowing French that well, it's pretty hard to hear what she's singing. Besides, French doesn't always agree with the musical accents and so it's easy to misunderstand. Reading makes it less complicated, and I even think of putting up a concert singing a bunch of songs now that I know them at a higher level. Thank you very much for this informative site! I will be back soon to check out new details.
Ida
Hello Ida, and thank you for your visit. I'm glad you found the site interesting and intend to come back. Unfortunately, there is not very much news to report of Françoise at the moment, so not many updates apart from the occasional new photo, postcard or magazine. Hopefully, some time later this year, there will be news of a new album. In the meantime, there are all these interesting messages like yours from fans "all over the world".

I was first enchanted by her voice in 1968 on hearing, then buying the album "Loving", which I still own and play, though I have never seen it anywhere ever again. I have a couple of her albums, though until the internet they were very hard to find. And even though I don't speak or understand French, I cannot stop listening to her. I am pleased to be able just to make contact with people who appreciate Françoise, because no one I now know has ever heard of her. I've been singing since I was 5, and have been affected by few artists as I have by Ms. Hardy. But I don't have to tell you that.
If there is another copy of "Loving" out there somewhere, maybe you can help me find it. Until next time, I'll just say thank you for the opportunity to send this. I would imagine that her following in the US is sparse, but in me she will have a life-long admirer.
Sincerely, JG
