Hello Nam, thank you for your message. It's interesting to hear of all the places that Françoise's music has reached! As far as I know, none of Françoise's live performances are available on video or DVD. She does, however, appear on a couple of DVDs from a French TV show of the 1970s - "Numéro Un". The first, entitled "Jane Birkin/Numéro Un" includes Françoise singing "Femme parmi les femmes" and Françoise and Jane Birkin in duet for "Comment te dire adieu". The second, entitled "Serge Gainsbourg et Jane Birkin/Numéro Un" includes Françoise singing "Je suis moi". The DVDs were released last year, available from Japan in "NTSC-region 2" format.
I don't know of any others.

I heard that there are at least two new projects of duets. First, Françoise Hardy should sing with JANE BIRKIN in 'Rendez-vous' (disc available in march 2004). Hello again Laurent. Yes, I had heard rumours about both of these projects recently. My information is that the duet with Brian Molko is an English version of the song. I look forward to hearing both. Jane Birkin is quite well known in this country, for those of us old enough to remember, because of "Je t'aime moi non plus" which she "sang" with Serge Gainsbourg. It was a big hit in the UK.

Salut Romain. There are have been a few compilations which have included the tracks that you mention, so I don't know which one you bought. I have some of them myself, and knew about "Je ne suis là pour personne" and "Si ça fait mal", but was not aware that either "La sieste" or "C'est bien moi" had been remixed. There are 2 other songs that I know have been released with different versions (rather than remixes) are "Et même" and "Il n'y a pas d'amour heureux". There may are probably others.

I've only just discovered your site but I first came across the beautiful Francoise as an actress in the film "Grand Prix", back in the 70s I suppose. For years all I knew of her music was the wonderful song "All Over the World" but in the last few years I have been acquiring more and more of her lovely recordings, whether in English, French or German, all equally haunting. And there's nothing so sexy as a French girl singing in English!
I'd never met anyone who knew of her until recently when I spoke to a member of staff in a record shop in Glasgow who was a huge fan - I felt we were the only two people in the world who had heard of her!

Like Françoise herself, I believe many of her fans are rather shy, and are hiding away, but it's surprising how many of us there are out there. Hello Laurent. I wonder whether the France Gall version of "Tous les garçons et les filles exists at all. I don't know of anybody who has a copy. Some of the songs in your list I have heard on audio tape, and some I have seen on video. I have "Mon ange" and "Quelqu'un qui m'ressemble" on CD, but I don't know whether any of the others were ever officially released. Anyone else?

I'm not able to always access this site, but when ever I do, it is just so great to read all the letters that are written from all over the world. My family originated from the island of Mauritius, so French is now my second language, but when it comes to music, it is always first.
I was so lucky to have been able to see and hear Francoise during her concert in South Africa. I will always remember her walking on one of our beaches with a few of her entourage, dressed in a yellow polo neck sweater and black long pants. At first I thought I was seeing things, but it was the flowing long hair that made me realise that it was truly HER. She was not unfriendly, although, the group that were with her, drew around, she managed a "'allo bonjour" and it was I who was almost to shy to say a thing. I did manage to collect myself and was rewarded with an autograph. These days, I've managed to collect almost everything that she has sung and recorded, spending many hours, days, weeks in shops, internet etc. etc. However, I do wish to take this opportunity to thank Rolf, my friend in Germany for all his help in filling all the "gaps" I once had in my collection.
As my work involves me travelling around the world on cruise liners, I'm to be found in record shops everywhere! This year I was able to almost completely find all the EPs that were released in France during the 60s/70s. What a day I had in Nice.
So if I can help anyone with something, I can only try. I can never imagine life without Francoise, in fact there is none!

You are so lucky to have been able to see Françoise perform live, and to have met her at the peak of her career. Like you, I had most of her records from the 60s, but have had fun completing the French EP collection more recently. Perhaps on your travels you will have the opportunity to find some obscure items. Françoise's releases seem to have reached most parts of the world.

Thank you for your comments on the site, Phil, and welcome. It's not true of all, but you are right, we English have a reputation for being inhibited, unemotional - stiff upper lip and all that... For me, songs sung in French sound so much better than in English, although Françoise singing in English with her accent is another thing altogether.

Hello Sylvie. Unfortunately, I have not seen the film, and it will be probably never be shown widely here in the UK. As you can see from the message above, received shortly after yours, the song featured in the film is "L'amitié". It was first released on an LP (Vogue FH 3) in 1965. This LP is now available on CD, but "L'amitié" has also appeared on many compilations which are still available. Take your pick.

Hello Jan. Unfortunately for us all, Françoise stopped giving live concerts at the end of the 1960s due to stage fright. There have been one or two live appearances since, but never performing solo. To promote her record releases, there are usually TV appearances, so we have to make do with these and her records.

As a wild-child of the 60's I have followed the hi's and low's of popular music for 40 years and have shelves full of recordings from hundreds of very competent artists. Inevitably, I've asked myself "if you had to keep just one track what would it be?" - You've guessed it!
The sad thing is that until 2 years ago, shopping in a French supermarket, I'd thought that Francoise was a one hit wonder. Discovering all her past and present material has been a fantastic experience and wholly confirms what a superb professional she is.
Interestingly, my teenage family immediately understand and appreciate the quality of Francoise's material. No trip down the Autoroutes goes as well as those with Francoise on the CD player.
Why, oh why is Francoise not better appreciated? In these troubled times what better anthem can there be, for people separated by wars, economics, or business. A global reappraisal/revival of Francoise's work is long overdue.
Keep it up Warren - you're doing a great job.
Thank you for your comments on the site, Richard. Choosing just one track to keep would be extremely difficult, but yes, "All over the world" would certainly be on my short list. Sadly, here in the UK, and also in the USA, I believe, we are all too rarely exposed to any music in languages other than English. I have not met many English people who have even heard of Françoise Hardy, and those who do only know of the few songs that made the charts. We know what they are all missing.

Hello again Thomas. Thank you for this information. Yes, there are some interesting photos there, but many of them look familiar. They are possibly different exposures, but some of them have definitely been used on album covers. I have Jean-Marie Périer's "mes années 60" volumes 1 and 2. Volume 1 (332pp) has 26 pages on Françoise including 15 pictures in colour, 7 black & white. Volume 2 (192pp) has 20 pages on Françoise with 15 pictures in colour, 2 black & white. Many of the 'unpublished' pictures from this site are in these books.

Hello Alex, thank you for your message. Yes, there are 5 years between Françoise's first record release and "Ma jeunesse fout le camp", and her style matured significantly. I wasn't aware that Françoise had a partnership with Dylan. He, like many of us at the time, was fascinated by her, and they met in Paris during one of his concerts. English and American rock 'n' roll and pop generally were certainly a major influence on her in the early years - some of the early songs were French translations of English language songs. This influence continued in different ways. In 1972 Françoise release an LP (re-released in 2000 as "If you listen"), all English except for one song. These were all covers of songs she had heard in the late 60s or early 70s. A cover of the Everly Brothers "So sad" (from 1960) is on "Clair-obscur", the most recent album.
It's very difficult to make recommendations - there are so many to choose from - and as I have said before in replies to others, everyone has their own favourites. Because Françoise has recorded for different labels over the years, there are not many compilations covering the full range. One that does is the 3CD boxed set "Messages Personnels". Less expensive options are another 3CD "60 chansons" or the 2CD " The Vogue years", but both of these cover only the early 1960s. The CD "En résumé" ranges from the 60s to the 90s - as you would expect, a very small selection, but worth considering. Try one (or more) of these, decide which era you like best, and then go for an original album from that time. Make good use of Georg Rommerskirchen's discography in making your choices. Good luck.

The 3CD "60 Chansons", like all other compilations, is somebody else's opinion on which are Françoise's best songs from the 60s, although the majority of them are included here. If you ask "what are Françoise's best songs", you would not get the same answer from any fans. Everybody has their own favourites. Some of mine are included in your list. Having said all that, this CD set is certainly a good place to start. If you like what you hear and want more, you should probably start looking for the CD releases of the original LPs.

I first saw and heard Francoise Hardy, in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil during the International Festival of Popular Song in 1968. She scored a 4th place with the song "A Quoi ca Sert". Since then I felt in love. Years have been gone, but only now with the advance of internet, I was able to contact some french friends thru another famous french singer, Michel Polnareff and my friend she sent me a CD of Francoise Hardy (11 songs) avec Serge Gainsbourg (15 songs).
I am taking advantage of internet to improve my french. In Brazil we have french class until High School.
By printing all songs from Francoise Hardy, Michel Polnareff and of course the senior Charles Aznavour, more and more I became passionate for the french language.
I live in San Diego - California and recently due to war in Iraq, the frenchs are now to americans what the pollands used to be: reason for moron jokes. This really made me sad and I have been "fighting" to defend the country that is the cradle of democracy. The french gave to the americans the first lessons of democracy, but they don't acknowledge it...
Francoise inspired me to learn her language and I discovered thru International Television a free french class called "French in Action" by professor Pierre Capretz, chairman of French department at Yale University, circa 1986. Pure french, period... Thanks Francoise you made me know Valerie Allain, the main character of the "French in Action" a beauty from God, a pride of France.
By the way, does anyone knows the whereabouts of Valerie Allain? There are rumours she was killed in an moto accident (1997?). If anybody knows, please let me know.

Hello again Vincent. Virgin Records have certainly re-released many of Françoise's albums on CD, but there are still a few songs that have never been released on CD. As far as Françoise's astrology is concerned, I personally cannot comment. Although I have some of her books, I have not taken enough time to understand them fully.

Every time for a few years now, there have been fears that the latest album will be the last. Je l'ai aussi mais la qualité sonore n'est pas fantastique.

Francoise and J.Dutronc sang the first in two different programmes in the Sixties, I have extracts (only extracts) of these two programmes on video. If Sebastien wanted evidence that it is Françoise who is singing...
Regarding "J'aime les garçons" the famous duo sang it in a superb programme devoted to Francoise and produced by Jean-Christophe Averty: "Françoise Hardy Show" (probably in 1966 or 1967.) Françoise guests were Dutronc, Bobby Lapointe and one could also see and hear Aimable play certain songs of Françoise on the accordion. Canal Jimmy repeated the programme in the 1980s. I also have this, but the sound quality is not fantastic.
I would like to be able to contact Sebastien to know how and where he got these two songs. Not that they my are favourites, but because they are amusing and because I want to have all of Françoise songs... We could also make certain exchanges. I managed to listen to some of it, but it seemed to finish rather abruptly. Astrology has been a major part of Françoise's life for many years now, a contributory factor to the situation where her musical output is less than many of us would hope for. So, we get quality, but not quantity.

However, Françoise recorded her version of the song under the title "San Salvador", with lyrics by Hugues de Courson and Patrick Modiano. It was released on the LP "Point" in 1970. There was also a German version, available only on a rare South African LP. The French LP was re-released in 1995 on a CD entitled "Soleil", and this is still available to buy.

I don't remember the name of the program, but it's always a pleasure to look at it. Her previous program was called "Harem" and she used to interview 3 women. At the end one man, who was hidden during the interviews, used to come out and say his opinion about what had been said. It was a very relaxing program, and Catherine Spaak was very charming...
Last week I could see another time a beautiful movie with Vittorio Gasmann, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Catherine Spaak. In Italian the name of the movie is "Il sorpasso". I don't know the translation. It was shot during the first half of the 60's and is about a 15 of August lived by two men (Gasmann and Trintignant) who meet by accident and leave for a trip on the shores from Lazio to Toscana until they arrive in the place where the former wife of Gasmann lives with her daughter, a very young and beautiful Catherine Spaak.
It's a bitter movie because has a sad ending, but nonetheless is a beautiful movie. Another great Italian movie of that period with Catherine Spaak is "La voglia matta" with Ugo Tognazzi.
I'll be 44 in October. I'm not that old and I was a child in the 60's, but I do remember that period as a good period. I can't say why.
I do still love that music and those songs, those movies, those actors and actress, those singers and so on...
I also do remember another French artist like Sylvie Vartan, the wife of Johnny Hallyday. She was less charming than Spaak and Hardy, but she was nice too.

The English names for the film "Il Sorpasso" is "Easy Life" and for "La Voglia Matta", "Crazy Desire".
Françoise also appeared in a few films - "Chateau en Suede", "Une Balle au Coeur", "Grand Prix" and smaller parts in a few others. Although it is interesting to see her in these films, it was the singing and song-writing career that Françoise had always wanted that she chose to continue.

If you are particularly looking for English songs, then it becomes more difficult. English songs from the 1960s are particularly difficult to find (try eBay), but 2 albums from the 1970s are still available - "If you listen", available anywhere and "The Françoise Hardy Collection" in the HMV Easy series, available only from HMV (UK). Some of the compilation CDs also include a few English songs. Get buying!

I understand from Laurent's books (downloadable from his site - www.ficsx22.com) that "La bataille" is an old card game. The track was included on the CD "Love songs", released in 1987. Exactly what the significance of these words are, I have no idea.

I am still in the process of discovering her work, and it was only a few days ago that I came across some of her recordings in English. Raymond, yes, "Dans le monde entier" has appeared on many CDs and CD sets over the years. Probably the easiest one for you to find would be the 2CD "The Vogue years", released in the UK in 2001 and still available in most good record shops or on-line from www.hmv.co.uk.

I listened to the CD that my friend made & it has a wonderful song "Tous les garcons et les filles" I rushed out & bought the CD "Les Chansons D'amour". But this CD is a compilation of the songs recorded in the early 60s. The song in my friend's CD is recorded much later & she has a much richer voice which I like better than the one recorded in 62. He could not find the original CD. He can only remember that the back of the CD has a black & white picture of Francoise holding a guitar. I've been searching for a week now without success. Please let me know the CDs that has the song "Tous les garcons et les filles" recorded much later than the 60s if you happen to know.

Hello Thanh, thanks for the message. I am not aware of more than one version of "Tous les garçons et les filles" by Françoise Hardy, but I could be wrong. Some of her songs have been re-mixed and released on compilation albums, but not, as far as I know "Tous les garçons et les filles". I've been unable to identify any CD in my collection that fits your description. The song has also been covered by many people. Is it possible that you have a version by someone else? If you could send me a copy of the song (or part of it) in MP3 format, I may be able to help you to identify it.
Update: - the song Thanh was looking for was the version by Marie Myriam.

This is a superb site and has provided me with so much information. I fell for Francoise in 1964 when I was still at school, I loved her records and bought whatever was issued, but for so long it was really difficult to find out anything about her. Around that time I had a particularly unhappy romantic experience and Francoise and her music gave me much solace. I have loved her ever since!
It is great that so much of her work is now on CD and available, if you are patient, in the U.K., and the lyrics on this site are so helpful - some of her songs I have got word perfect, but others I am afraid I made a bit of a hash of. I have many musical interests but Francoise will always be tops with me. I am very jealous of Monsieur Dutronc.....!
I have often burst into song with her material when at work and have had some strange looks from people who seemed surprised that I should be singing in French. Thanks again to Francoise for helping me with my accent and vocabulary.
Hello Mike. Thank you for your message and your comments on the site. It was 1964 when I discovered Françoise too. I lived near Manchester at the time, and there was a shop in the city centre (I think it was called "Rare Records") that imported French records. I used to go regularly, looking for new releases after I had heard them on the radio. What a wonderful way to learn French, listening to Françoise's records. It always causes amusement when I tell people that Françoise taught me all the French I know! Not entirely true, but she has certainly been a major influence.
