Warren GILBERT's Mountain Page

I am lucky in living close to the Yorkshire Dales where there are many hillwalking routes, but for a good day in the mountains, the Lake District is hard to beat.

One of my favourite Lake District mountains is Great Gable.
Its distinctive dome shaped summit makes it easily recognisable from many of the other Lake District peaks.

Great Gable from Kirkfell.

On a much grander scale, but unfortunately not accessible to me on a day trip, the Scottish Highlands and Islands are another favourite haunt.

The Munros - A Personal View by Hamish Brown

"Only a hill, but all of life to me,
Up there, between the sunset and the sea"

What are The MUNROs?

The MUNROs are the 284 Scottish mountains with a height of 3000 feet or over.
They were first defined by Sir Hugh T Munro in 1891, and have been changed only by more accurate measurement since.

Munro himself never completed all his summits, this feat first being accomplished in 1901 by Rev A E Robertson. Since then, completing the MUNROs has been achieved by hundreds of climbers, and has been (and is) the ambition of many thousands more.

The majority of the MUNRO summits can be reached by walking, but a few involve rock climbing. One of these, and my particular favourite is the Inaccessible Pinnacle on the Cuillin ridge of Skye, affectionately known as the "In-Pin".

Another favourite area is the Grey Corries, a splendid ridge a few miles east of Ben Nevis - (137K jpeg image).

Inaccessible Pinnacle

My assault on the MUNROs began in 1986, and after a long layoff, the countdown is now back on.
